Criminal Law Reforms

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) came into effect on July 1, 2024, replacing the Indian Penal Code. The BNS introduces several changes, including the addition of 20 new offenses and the removal of 19 provisions from the previous code. Notably, it increases imprisonment terms for 33 offenses and fines for 83 offenses, introduces mandatory minimum punishments for 23 offenses, and allows for community service sentences for six offenses. The BNS also adds new offenses such as organized crime, terrorism, cybercrime, and financial fraud, while removing sedition as an offense and introducing a new offense for acts endangering India’s sovereignty, unity, and integrity.
